Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a pathogen from the herpes virus group that can play a role in chronic diseases. At the end of puberty, more than 90% of people have undergone an EBV infection and formed antibodies that are retained for life. A weakened immune system or a simultaneous detection of certain bacteria (e.g. mycoplasma) can lead to symptoms or reactivation of the EBV infection.
